Maruia falls

About an hour and a half south of Rotoiti. I made a snap decision to follow a narrow little side track which got alarmingly narrower and littler and pot-holier before I decided that it was not a wise idea to take the rental car any further. The falls were just around the corner.

I've heard that there are somewhere near the Maruia river wild hot springs. I haven't seen them, much less swum in them but I'd like to some day.

Yeah, I see why. Pretty amazing.

For when you're back down that way: Look for a random little road near the Lewis Pass with a wee sign saying Gloria Flats (if you're travelling Chch-wards, it's on the right). Pootle along the track up the river for a bit and you get to the hot springs, which people have arranged rocks around to make pools. It's a gorgeous spot, but it's always a risk depending on how high the river is - you may have hardly any water at all, they may be too cold, or they may be submerged by the river!
There's nothing like a cold clear winter's night spent soaking in them by star- and moonlight :)
