I'd written this frame off, along with a few others. My automatic focus and light metering really does not play well with fine thread-like subjects, but a bit of exploration with the GIMP's levels adjustment and a judicious crop and I got this.
I had to google that - did you ever use it for astronomy? The earliest CCDs were just coming in as I started my time as an observer, and as an amateur before that I was mostly playing with the biggest Dobsonians I could lay my hands on rather than attempting astrophotography.
I used Technical Pan for high contrast black and white photography when I was in high school, back around 1970. I also did a little hypersensitizing with it and H/He 'forming gas' in the mid-80s for astrophotography.
CCDs made things much easier. But I do have fond memories of Kodak Technical Pan.
