We must have seen some 30 boats going out over the bar in the space of about 15 minutes this morning. I'm surprised there was enough space out there to drop a line. Things usually settle down a bit after New Year's, when most people have to head back to work .

One of the things I really miss, being a grown-up and living elsewhere in the country now, is coming here midwinter. I should do that again someday.

Is it still pretty mild in mid-winter? I'd guess you're far enough north that it is, unlike Christchurch or Dunedin.

Midwinter daytime max temperatures I would guess average 8-10 C, with rain usual. You (well I) probably wouldn't want to swim.

Yeah, that's getting on toward cool. 10 C is about my lower limit for swimming. I much prefer 20.
