It's a bit worrying when the machine makes a loud kerthunk noise and just stops. Fortunately, it is uncomplicated as such things go, so I was able to locate the problem (a stray thread in the wrong place at the wrong time), and took the opportunity to clean all the dust and fluff out and oil everything that looked like it needed it while I was at it. It's running quieter now too.
