No, really, it's not simply the mis-match. They march uphill, there are some solids in there, and everything keeps ones eye moving!
Now for my part(s). When we rented the car to drive South Island, one of the interesting features was the 'power fold' mirrors. If I hadn't seen some of the garages in Chch already, I might of wondered about that. What's the second part? My 'Ear' is what. I've this odd ability to start sounding like what I'm hearing, such that at the start of the trip Kiwis asked where in the States I'm from, and by the end they asked where in Canada I'm from since how I pronounce things somewhat morphed. Occasionally something sticks, and now my local neighbors look at me funny when I mention 'gaireges.'
PS I grew up along the border between US & Canada with family on Mother's side in Canada; as it is my pronunciation now is a mix of Canuck, Northern Midwest and Southern American...
I too tend to pick up accents, which had quite peculiar results when I spent a week on a mountain with a Serb and an Australian. Unfortunately I didn't get to keep any of the Serbian accent. Fortunately, the Australian one didn't stick either.
