Gas (raargh)

So I get home this evening, potter around until I get hungry, then microwave some chili and rice for dinner. Turn on the TV, and attempt to turn on the heater. No gas. Try the stove. No gas. No hot water. Bugger. I ring up the energy company, and they say there are no faults in the area, can I go and check the meter? This involves tramping through the neighbours' chicken pen and down the overgrown path to the second entrance in the dark, so I find a torch and do so, to find that the gas has been turned off at the meter. Raargh
I call the energy people back, and they have no record of any work in the area, and they will send a contractor to turn it back on in 1 to 2 hours. It's been 1.5 hours so far, they still have time....
Meanwhile I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the flat being inspected today, and if so, why I didn't at least get a phone call.
I don't like it when I don't know whether I have anyone to be legitimately pissed off at or not.
