Speaking of which, I'd quite like some steampunkish buttons for this coat I'm making. I found some today which were brass-coloured with screw-head designs on them, but they weren't really big enough. The pattern calls for 20mm buttons, and I'd consider going larger, but definitely not smaller.

Oh hey, spiral bevel gears! Really useful if you want to change the angle of rotation. Like, say, from a driveshaft to a wheel.

I would just call those bevel gears. The spiral bevel gears I've seen have a curve in them, in addition to the bevel. Wikipedia has an article about them.

That aside, I'm overjoyed that you recognized them instantly. Also that Sarah took the picture.

It's part of the floodgate mechanism on the upper Karori dam. It was completed in about 1906, but I stand by my title, as no doubt it was designed before the turn of the century.
