I have no self control when it comes to fabric. This was supposed to be my Easter weekend project. Its a full length coat, which I am making in a wide wale camel coloured corduroy. Its a practice for the coat I actually want to make as the corduroy is about an order of magnitude cheaper than the wool or wool blend I actually want to make it out of and the pattern is at the limits of my sewing skills. The collar has turned out pretty well and the waistline is at the right distance from the neck - so far so good. I still have sleeves, lining and buttonholes (eep) to go.

Other than knowing one must match the 'grain' of fabrics, one still wonders if there is a more efficient resource-management layout than this...

Mind you, nearly all of my sewing experiences involve straight lines, not much in the way of curves.

In my experience, the pattern manufacturers are pretty good at efficient layouts. I can sometimes do a little better after I have adjusted the pattern, but not much. The main problem is that the fabric not only has a grain, but a nap as well, which means that all the wide bits are at the same end. Actually, scratch that - the main problem is that people generally don't want box-shaped clothes.

I looked at the picture without scrolling down to read the text, and I wondered if you were making a ball gown. Good luck with the coat. I imagine a corduroy coat will be a very useful thing to have. Easier to care for than the wool coat, and quite durable.

More cold weather than balls for me in the forseeable future, unfortunately.
