I suppose it does. Also, it avoids the all too common British Commonwealth City street names such as King, Queen, Dominion, Victoria, Charles, George, etc... I've come across those same street names repeated in many Canadian towns. After a while it seems like there must have been a standard city building kit issued to newly appointed governors headed out to the colonies.
Wellington hasn't missed out entirely - there is a Victoria St running parallel to Cuba St in town. Auckland has the full compliment though, with Queen St, Albert St and Dominion Rd, and I once had a messy bicycle accident between the Victoria and Albert lakes (not really lakes, more glorified duck ponds) in Christchurch.
